The event
Snack and confectionery packaging is currently dominated by plastic-based film materials that provide essential barrier and sealing functions. However, increasing regulatory requirements, stricter recycling targets, and growing consumer concerns highlight the limitations of these conventional solutions.
Against this background, the Sustainable Packaging Institute (SPI) presents innovative research approaches for plastic-free yet functional packaging concepts. The presentation addresses the challenges of conventional film structures and introduces alternative pathways beyond paper-based systems, which typically rely on additional plastic coatings. A particular focus is placed on the development of novel plastic-free film materials that will be tested and scaled using a newly acquired cast film line. The ultimate goal is to deliver future-ready packaging solutions for the confectionery industry that combine product protection, sustainability, and circularity.
