ProSweets Cologne excellently positioned with over 300 exhibitors

ProSweets Cologne is excellently positioned. In total, around 340 companies (approximately 4 percent more than in 2018) from the sectors of manufacturing, packaging and ingredients will exhibit in Cologne from 27 to 30 January 2019. Producers of sweets and snacks will be able to get a unique and concentrated overview of machinery, technology, raw ingredients and materials as well as a wealth of new ideas and contacts for the development of new products. Whether raw sweets, new refining technologies, innovative packaging solutions or digital networking in production, the topics covered at ProSweets Cologne are diverse and reflect the current industry trends. Together with ISM, the world's mot important trade fair for sweets and snacks, which is taking place simultaneously, the entire value chain of sweets production and sales will be gathered at the same time and place; a worldwide unique constellation with extensive synergies for the entire industry.

New formulations with raw sweets
Many consumers want to eat healthier. There is also a growing desire for sweets and snacks that contain natural ingredients and high nutritional value. Manufacturers are turning to new innovative ingredients in order to meet demands of consumers. One of these ingredients are raw sweets, which include dried fruits and nuts. These ingredients often require gentle refining processes. Trade visitors to ProSweets Cologne can gather information about the concept of raw sweets as well as other topics related to ingredients.

Besides the equipment for processing the heat-sensitive raw materials of the plant engineers, the special display “Reformulation for Sweets & Snacks” in hall 10.1, stand C44, presented in cooperation with the German Agricultural Society (DLG), will show further solutions for the concept of reformulation and insights into the challenges, opportunities and risks. The special display will be topped off by guided tours focusing on “reformulation” which, in addition to the solutions of market-leading exhibitors, will also give trade visitors the opportunity to have individual discussions and ask questions. Additional knowledge transfer will take place in the “Speakers Corner” hall 10.1, stand H91. Here as well, DLG will give an overview of new solutions with respect to technologies, reformulation and sensors in the sweets and snack industry.

Packaging for sweets and snacks
ProSweets Cologne is the right place when it comes to finding information about packaging in the sweets and snacks industry. Today, packaging really does have to encompass many elements. Along with aesthetics, functionality, protection and sustainability, also important are design, individual style, freshness and quality. The trend is towards biodegradable and renewable packaging that is resealable, convenient, lightweight and unbreakable. One example are biobased foils in which the polymers are made from sugar cane ethanol or milk proteins. New customising technologies and intelligent packing material combinations are also being introduced. They allow stand-up pouches to be made completely without aluminium and which can be produced from a digitally printed paper compound.

Last but not least, the individualisation of products is very important. At ProSweets Cologne, new developments in this area will be presented on industrial printers. These machines are able to print customised labels for confectionery or folding boxes.

Trade visitors can get detailed insight into the packaging innovations in the “Speakers Corner” in hall 10.1, stand H91. Experts will be presenting the trends and developments expected by the industry in a daily session on the subject of packaging. Answers to questions on how manufacturers can deal with the challenges in packaging and related technologies and find the right designs and materials will be provided in the special packaging event “Function Meets Design” in hall 10.1, stand H50. Experts from the Fraunhofer Institute, LSD GmbH and PACOON GmbH will be presenting and speaking on the focus areas of traceability, digitalisation and sustainability.

In conjunction with ISM, trade visitors can also admire the new products and packaging innovations in the special New Product Showcase exhibition presented in 130 display windows in Hall 2.2. The ISM Packaging Award powered by ProSweets Cologne will be given for the most innovative packaging on 27 January 2019 at an exclusive dinner.

The sweet side of Industry 4.0
More than ever, this year's ProSweets Cologne will be looking at the digital networking of systems. Important criteria in this context are high product quality and the accompanying consistent hygiene monitoring. Industry 4.0 technologies, which improve the machines in terms of self-diagnosis and error elimination, create the conditions for the required efficiency. Confectionery machines are therefore becoming increasingly digitally networked and equipped with sensors in order to provide substantial amounts of data. Maintenance and cleaning aspects are especially important in this context. In addition, processes are becoming increasingly automated in order to save on resources, time and money. CIP methods (clean-in-place) are state-of-the-art, where the cleaning solutions circulate in the machines. ProSweets Cologne will demonstrate how far the Industry 4.0 technologies have already advanced within the industry and what the next stages on the way to the Smart Factory are.
